Fatty 1 – Intermittent Fasting – Day 2

Posted by actingchick on April 16, 2009

So today was a workout day, and day 2 of my experiment with intermittent fasting.   I woke up at 5am, well OK, the alarm went off at 5am.  After a few snoozes I crawled out of bed at 5:18.

I got into my workout clothes, got my hair wet to smooth it down from it’s Phyllis Diller heights.  Normally I have a half a slice of bread and peanut butter before I workout, but of course I’m fasting, so I don’t.  I do make some green tea like normal, and take it with me to the gym

I do Crossfit, which is fairly intense exercise.  I was a little concerned how I would feel about working out without my snack.  The thing is when I first started Crossfit I didn’t eat before, but somewhere at some point I started.

I felt pretty much the same as usual, although perhaps less tired than normal.  I wasn’t hungry because I’m often not in the morning anyway.

The workout was for time:

400m run, 30 kettlebell snatches into a lunge (15 each side), and 30 situps
400m run, 20 kettlebell snatches into a lunge (10 each side), and 20 situps
400m run, 10 kettlebell snatches into a lunge (5 each side), and 10 situps

My time was 17:02.

I felt fine doing the workout.  Afterwards I wasn’t hungry, but I’m often not after working out anyway.  Mostly because all the blood has been shuttled to the muscles and away from the stomach.  Useful in pre-historic days to help run from bears and things.  No need to digest when someone is trying to digest you.

I didn’t start getting really hungry until about noon. Hunger off and on before that, but if I kept my mind busy I didn’t notice it.  I didn’t have a headache or the jitteriyness.  A little spacey about noon.

I brought leftover spaghetti to work and more veggies and hummus and trailmix.  Tonight I have a dinner out with some people I haven’t seen in a long time.  Dinner is at 7pm, and after that I will start day 3.

Have I mentioned how I love not having to count calories or anything.  Worry about what foods I can and can’t eat.  I can go out to dinner and have a cheeseburger, and it is OK.  I love it.  I’m going to have a salad instead of fries though.  No point in going crazy.

Hang in there! I just found your blog and am intrigued enough to keep following you. I just started intermittent fasting on Monday of this week. I read the Fast 5 book and Eat Stop Eat and decided to use the ESE approach so that I could still eat daily. So I fast off and on for 24 hour periods (Noon-Noon for me) and so far it is working great with my schedule. I also eat primarily whole food vegan (lots of veggies, fruit, nuts and seeds) and enjoy a little meat and cheese once or twice a month. I try to keep my diet as varied as possible but I have about 40+ pounds to loose so eating a lot of fruits and vegetables allows me to get in the nutrients I need with few calories.

I started eating whole food vegan in February and started the IF this week. Thus far I’ve lost 20lbs so I can’t complain.

Good luck to you and I greatly admire your workout efforts!

Thanks for your support, and congratulations on the 20lbs! It’s nice to know I’m not alone in trying this out. It is getting easier each day, which is hopeful. I’m trying to eat more whole foods, and more fruits and veggies. I try to make sure at least my first meal after my fast is nice and clean, as they say. I admire you doing this mostly vegan. I love me dairy too much. Meat I could do with out, but milk and ice cream are my weakness.
