Fatty 1 – Intermittent Fasting – Day 1
Posted by actingchick on April 16, 2009
So I started my fast at 8pm the night before, right after I finished my dinner. I happened to be have class that night, and I didn’t get home until 11pm. i like to have a snack then before bed, but I didn’t.
I woke up at 6am. I put some food items together so that I would have something healthy to break my fast with. The intermittent fasting (IF) websites often talk about being able to eat what you want, but of course they say, to eat healthy with lots of veggies and fruit and lean meat for best results. Not as one IF guy puts it, IFOC, IF On Crap.
I packed some sliced turkey and cheese, red peppers and carrots strips, some hummus, and some trailmix. I also packed a protein shake that I make that I normally use when I work out. It is chocolate protein powder, chocolate green veggie powder, and fish oil. Sounds horrible I know, but it’s not bad.
In the morning, I’m often not hungry so no big deal there. On days I don’t work out I generally wait until I get to work to eat, but of course today I got to work and had to remind myself that I wasn’t eating.
I felt pretty good until about 9am or so, when I started feeling a little spacey. I figured that was from low blood sugar and normally I would go running for food. I was drinking green tea all morning to keep me occupied. I got a headache. I think it was a sinus headache, but made worse by not eating.
Many of the IF posts mention having more energy. I didn’t feel sluggish or tired that’s for sure. In fact I felt kind of jittery, like I had too much caffeine. I wasn’t tired, but I was spacey.
Despite having a headache, being jittery, and spacey, oh, and hungry, I managed to wait until 12:30 to eat. It wasn’t actually that hard.
I had my protein shake, and made myself wait a half hour before eating anything else to let that settle. Then I ate all the lunch items I brought, slowly, not cramming them down.
Later on in the afternoon about 4:30 I ate an hard boiled egg and a banana. When I got home I ate some spaghetti with meat sauce, a green salad, and a skinny cow ice cream sandwich. The last bite was about 8pm, and that’s when I started my second round of fasting.
Overall it wasn’t too bad. What I enjoyed about it most was that I knew when I got to eat, I could eat whatever I wanted. I did choose healthy foods, but I didn’t HAVE to. I didn’t have to count calories, or points, or carbs, or anything. It was such a relief, I am looking forward to tomorrow.
Tomorrow is a workout day. I’m curious to see how that goes.
